What is Midsummer?

Midsummer is a usually a celebratory party, event or gathering that occurs to mark the summer solstice. It marks the longest day of the year of the Northern Hemisphere when the planet is abundant in nature, rich in food produces and extended sunshine.

In pagan religions and in Sweden Midsummer is a major holiday that is celebrated with traditional food dishes, dancing, and drinking with friends and family. It's also a time to honour the sun's power at it's most powerful and to mark the transition from the longest days into the shortening days of Autumn.

Midsummer's Eve is also often related to the fae and nature spirits, a time when the veil between each worlds is believed to be thin.

What are the Traditions of Midsummer?

  • Bonfires: Bonfires are a very common practise, with some believing they ward off evil spirits and help to connect you with the sun's energy. It is also a great meditation or visualisation tool.
  • Rituals and Magic: Many magical folk will engage in rituals, casting their spells, and practising divination during this time. It's a great time to use the abundance of herbs, flowers, and other natural elements.
  • Connecting with Nature: Midsummer is a time to take a step back, switch off and re-connect with the natural world. This can include the sun, trees, flowers, and herbs.
  • Celebrating Abundance: It's a time to celebrate the abundance of nature and the fruits of the earth. Embrace gratitude, honour friendships and re-align yourself.
